It’s Time for Costa Rica Sport fishing Tournaments

In Eco-Adventure, Parties and Events, Tours and Activities

January through April  is when sports fishing tournaments take place in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is world renown for sportfishing and the tournaments pull in pros from around the world.  The central Pacific, offshore and inshore, are some of the busiest game fish waters anywhere and more than 80 International Game Fish Association sportfishing records have been set here.

January through April is the height of the billfish bite; an ordinary day is landing 20 or more Pacific sailfish, black, striped, or blue marlin when conditions are right. Billfish aren’t the only fish in the sea: roosterfish, jacks, snoop, dorado, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and snapper are also found in these waters. Be aware that Costa Rican law doesn’t anglers to keep or even boat billfish; fishing for these game fish is catch and release only.

If you fancy your chances in the competition, there are several tournaments to enter near Croc’s Resort & Casino in Herradura and Quepos:

The Los Sueños Signature Triple Crown

Los Sueños Resort & Marina, Herradura

Jan 16 – 19 / Feb 27 – Mar 2 / Mar 27 – 30, 2019

This prestigious tournament spans 3 months, with 3 days of fishing each month. Each team aims to catch and release the most billfish; a Pacific sailfish is worth 100 points, any marlin is worth 500. IGFA rules apply, and the competition is formidable—the best catch-and-release tournament teams vie for the top spot. Release numbers can top thousands in each leg.

The Pelagic Rockstar Offshore Tournament

Marina Pez Vela, Quepos

January 12 – 13, 2019

The Pelagic Rockstar is one of the most enjoyable tournaments for every ability. This tourney includes 3 divisions, billfish, tuna, and dorado. Winning is a matter of total points for the billfish released (Pacific sailfish and blue, black, or striped marlin), the heaviest 2-fish total for each of tuna and dorado, or by winning each division. Because the rules are lax at best, teamwork means any one could win. Anyone on the boat can hook and fight the fish, even passing the rod to another team mate.

Quepos Billfish Cup

Marina Pez Vela, Quepos

March 15 – 16, 2019

This is another 2-day team event with 2 divisions, big boat (35 ft. +) and small boat (<35 ft.), each vying for the top point tally. Tourney rules follow IGFA guidelines—hook and fight your own fish. First, second, and third-place teams take home the money. For this tournament and the Pelagic Rockstar tourney, visit

Offshore World Championship

Marina Pez Vela, Quepos

April 28 – May 3, 2019

This tournament is an invitational, drawing more than 50 teams from around the world that have won an OWC qualifying event. Teams draw a different boat each day.
